Care instructions
When caring for your dice mold, the process is similar to any other silicone mold.
Before pouring your resin:
Be sure to mist it lightly with demolding spray, taking care to coat the insides of each mold cavity.
During use:
Do not attempt to remove dice until they are fully cured, as this can cause the dice to stick and potentially damage the mold cavities.
After use:
Wash with a small amount of soap and warm water, and then dry it with a soft towel, taking care not to leave any moisture inside the mold cavities.
Storage:
Store your mold with the cap in place on the base. Keep it on a level surface in a cool, dry area.
Can I use these dice molds without a degassing chamber or pressure pot?
YES! You can absolutely use these molds for making dice, whether or not you have a degassing chamber or pressure pot! To learn about preventing air bubbles in your dice, please see “Air Bubble Prevention” in the FAQs.
Air Bubble Prevention
If you have the means to do so, investing in a degassing chamber or pressure pot is a surefire way to limit air bubbles. If you don’t have either of these, here’s what you can do:
1) work in a warm room (~72 F). This will help your resin flow more easily.
2) coat the mold cavities with baby powder and tap out the excess, especially in the corners. This will help keep air bubbles from getting stuck as they rise.
3) wrap the mold in a heating pad before use, and leave the base on the it while pouring. This will help force air bubbles to the surface.
4) place resin in a warm water bath before pouring. This will push air bubbles to the top where you can pop them with a heat gun. But work fast; pot life will drop from ~40mins to ~10mins.
Do you have any recommended products?
I do! I highly recommend investing in a degassing chamber if you’re planning on making/selling large amounts of dice. My first was a BacoEng, and my newest one is a Pbautos. If you’re purchasing a large one (2 gal or more), you will need a two-stage vacuum pump.
I don’t have recommendations on pressure pots as I do not own one yet myself.
I also recommend purchasing a motorized resin mixer. They work great for small batches and they significantly cut down on air bubbles. I bought mine from hobby lobby for $25. You can also find a similar one on Amazon, but it’s about $43.
